Stitching Dreams: How Handwork is Empowering Students at Arise Community School

At Arise School, learning has always gone far beyond textbooks and blackboards. Arise believes in nurturing well-rounded, creative and resourceful young minds—and the newest extracurricular activity is doing just that!

Over the past month, the campus has been buzzing with a new kind of energy: the soft snip of scissors, bright threads and proud smiles of students discovering a new skill. Arise is delighted to introduce their new Needlework & Tailoring Class!

A spark started by inspiration, the journey began four weeks ago when Sylvia, a skilled and enthusiastic volunteer from the Netherlands, introduced handwork to the students, sharing her passion, patience and skills with them.

In just four short weeks, students have not only tried their hand at needlework, they have mastered the fundamentals. Their confident handling of scissors, precise measuring and cutting of fabric and delicate stitching, have all been truly inspiring to watch, proudly creating colourful, handmade bags, face masks and basic patterns whilst, at the same <me, developing hand-eye coordination and accuracy and learning safety awareness.

But, this is just the beginning. Sylvia wanted to ensure that this spark of creativity does not fade when her <me volunteering at Arise finishes. Thanks to her vision and generosity, Sylvia has set up the program for long-term success. With ongoing support to help with salary costs and essential sewing supplies, Lightness, a skilled tailor, has been welcomed to Arise as part of the staff team. In addition, more sewing machines will be on their way to Arise soon!

As with music, sport, chess and other extracurricular ac<vi<es already developed as an integral part of Arise School, handwork does so much more than teach a practical skill – it builds patience, confidence and an entrepreneurial mindset. When a child proudly holds up a bag they created from a simple piece of cloth, the sense of achievement is priceless.

Arise staff and ACE are incredibly proud of our young creators and deeply grateful to Sylvia for giving them this new opportunity and the resources to express themselves, grow and dream.
